A society, a partnership agreement, and 52 km of somebody's winter

The Bulkley Valley Cross Country Ski Club is a not-for-profit society. It operates the BV Nordic Centre on Crown land under a partnership agreement with Recreation Sites & Trails BC — which is a different arrangement from owning a hill, and a more fragile one.

What it actually is

Not a business with skiers on it — a society with land it looks after

The club is a not-for-profit society, and the Nordic Centre stands on Crown land under a partnership agreement with Recreation Sites & Trails BC. That distinction is not paperwork. It means the buildings, the range and the 52 km exist because a volunteer society keeps agreeing to look after a piece of public land, season after season.

Nobody here is paid to want you on the trails. That is the whole difference between a club and a resort.

What that means for a pass

Pass and membership money goes into grooming, fuel, the buildings and the programs — minus the two national fees that are passed straight through. There is no margin being taken out of it. When you buy a season pass you are not a customer; you are the reason the track is set.

The board

We have not named anybody, and that is deliberate

We could not reach the club's contact page and could not verify who currently holds office. Rather than guess at a president or copy a name out of an old newsletter, this concept names nobody. It addresses the Board and the Membership Registrar, and it uses the three inboxes the club publishes.

If the club would like its board listed here, that is a five-minute change and one this concept has deliberately left empty rather than filled in badly.

The load

What a volunteer society this size is actually carrying

These are not volunteer job titles — the club has not published a list of roles or a sign-up. They are simply the things the club operates, set out so the scale of it is visible. Every one of them is somebody's winter.

  • Trails

    Fifty-two kilometres, groomed for skate and for classic, all season.

  • Buildings

    A clubhouse, a caretaker cabin, a wax hut and a timing hut, all kept standing and kept warm.

  • The underpass

    A concrete underpass beneath Hudson Bay Mountain Road, so the network is one network.

  • Biathlon

    A range with its own cabin, and races hosted through the season.

  • Coaching

    Coaching for all ages, and the Bunnies and Rabbits classes for young children.

  • Registration

    A Membership Registrar, a membership roll, and two national fees to pass on.

There is no published volunteer sign-up, work-party schedule or AGM date, so this concept shows none. The way in is the way it has always been in a valley this size: email the club, or say something to somebody in the wax hut.

We did not find a published phone number for the club, so this concept does not show one. Everywhere a real site would put “call us”, this one puts an email address instead. If a number exists, it should be in the header on every page.
